16 October 2014 - Li Ka-shing, Asia's richest man and chairman of property developer Cheung Kong (0001) yesterday released a public statement commenting on Occupy Central for the first time. Li called on young people to abandon their Occupy Central campaign and go back to their families.
Li expressed that he does not want to see a stand still in Hong Kong’s electoral reform, but that people need wisdom to pursue their aspirations. He urges everyone not to let today's passion become tomorrow's regret. He believes the chances for the National People's Congress Standing Committee to withdraw its decision on electoral reform in Hong Kong are very slim, and said that since the handover, the principle of “one country, two systems” has protected Hong Kong's lifestyle.
Li also pointed out that Hong Kong people should be aware of soaring competitiveness in neighboring cities, with Shanghai having the potential to surpass Hong Kong.
